CalmWave is focused on reducing alarm fatigue in hospital ICUs. Our platform captures, analyzes, and synthesizes real-time hospital data such as vital signs and medications given to improve patient outcomes, optimize hospital operations, and enhance staff retention. We take inspiration from lessons learned in managing monitoring and alerting signals in Enterprise IT and apply them to healthcare organizations to improve Operations Health and efficiency.
Our Team
We are responsible for developing and operating the CalmWave platform. This includes infrastructure deployed in AWS and automated with Terraform; the data collection and processing pipeline, written in Elixir, that ingests real-time data from ICU bedside monitors as well as data from the EHR; integration with our Python-based algorithm engine; and the CalmWave web application (Phoenix LiveView) that clinicians use to obtain optimal alarm limit settings.
The Role
We are looking for a Security Engineer to help us safeguard our infrastructure, maintain compliance, and manage internal IT. As CalmWave’s first dedicated security hire, you will report to the VP of Engineering and have the following responsibilities:
- Security. Take the lead on designing, implementing, and managing security controls to protect our data and systems. Address issues identified by our security scanning tools such as AWS Security Hub, GuardDuty, and Inspector. Maintain and extend these tools to improve our security posture using Terraform for infrastructure automation. Create security policies, procedures, and other documentation to meet our security and compliance goals.
- Compliance. Coordinate CalmWave’s compliance efforts (SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA). Respond to issues flagged by our compliance platform (Vanta), update technical policies, and ensure our processes are aligned with industry standards.
- Internal IT. Serve as the general IT support person for the company. Handle equipment procurement, tracking, and ensure employee machines remain secure and up to date. Manage vendors and software tools used across the company (e.g. Google Suite, Slack).

About You
You’re a hands-on doer, a vigilant organizer, and a continuous learner who has at least one two years of relevant job experience. You could be a great fit for this role if you have experience in some of the following areas and are ready to ramp up quickly in areas that are new to you.
- Security – Hardening systems, detecting and monitoring threats. Industry-relevant certification is a big plus.
- Systems administration (Linux)
- Public cloud infrastructure (AWS, Oracle)
- Infrastructure automation (Terraform)
- Programming (Especially Python, Julia, Elixir)
- Compliance frameworks (SOC 2, HIPAA)
